THE SHOW MUST GO ON

This is a poem written by Mike in 1986, and distributed in the streets of London that same year. It paints a real-life picture of events in a street outside a stadium where a rock concert is happening, and sheds what is probably an unusual light – from the ground up, as you might say – on a type of event that would normally be documented from inside the stadium!

It’s a typical example of the attitude – and the angle of vision – that you encounter in the street poems of Bongo Mike.

The poem comes from a series called, rather alarmingly, “The Death Of A Street Poet” – after the title of the first poem in the series. In fact he actually lived for another 44 years, but was going through a period of intense depression in the years ’76 and ’77.

I’ll be taking a random look at some of the other street poems, in the near future.
